    Angular Resolution of an EAS Array for Gamma Ray Astronomy at Energies Greater Than 5 x 10 (13) Ev

    A 24 detector extensive air shower array is being operated at Ootacamund (2300 m altitude, 11.4 deg N latitude) in southern India for a study of arrival directions of showers of energies greater than 5 x 10 to the 13th power eV. Various configurations of the array of detectors have been used to estimate the accuracy in determination of arrival angle of showers with such an array. These studies show that it is possible to achieve an angular resolution of better than 2 deg with the Ooty array for search for point sources of Cosmic gamma rays at energies above 5 x 10 to the 13th power eV

    Antibacterial and antioxidant properties of macrocyclic Schiff bases with vanadium (V) complexes

    Macrocyclic Schiff bases have been synthesized by the condensation of acetyl acetone with semicarbazide hydrochloride and thiosemicarbazide in presence of methanol. Further, their oxovanadium complexes have been synthesized by using vanadium acetylacetone. The structural assignment of these compounds has been made on the basis of MP, TLC, MW determination,  conductivities, elemental analysis and UV, IR and 1HNMR spectral datas. The synthesized compounds were screened for their in vitro growth inhibiting activity against different strains of bacteria viz., Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus licheniformis, Escherichia coli and Micrococcus luteus (ATCC) and were compared with the standard antibiotic oflaxocin. Also in-vitro antioxidant activity of all compounds was determined by nitric acid free radical scavanging assay

    Radial flow of kaon mesons in heavy ion reactions

    This work investigates the collective motion of kaons in heavy ion reactions at SIS energies (about 1-2 GeV/nucleon). A radial collective flow of K+K^+ mesons is predicted to exist in central Au + Au collisions, which manifests in a characteristic "shoulder-arm" shape of the transverse mass spectrum of the midrapidity K+K^+ mesons. The K+K^+ radial flow arises from the repulsive K+K^+ mean field in nuclear matter. In spite of a strong reabsorption and rescattering the attractive K−K^- mean field leads as well to a collective radial flow of K−K^- mesons. The K−K^- radial flow, however, is different from that of K+K^+ mesons and can be observed by a characteristic "concave" structure of the transverse mass spectrum of the K−K^- mesons emitted at midrapidity. The kaon radial flows can therefore serve as a novel tool for the investigation of kaon properties in dense nuclear matter.Comment: 30 pages RevTex, 5 PS figures, accepted for publication in Phys.     Obstacle avoidance and distance measurement for unmanned aerial vehicles using monocular vision

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or commonly known as drones are better suited for "dull, dirty, or dangerous" missions than manned aircraft. The drone can be either remotely controlled or it can travel as per predefined path using complex automation algorithm built during its development. In general, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is the combination of Drone in the air and control system on the ground. Design of an UAV means integrating hardware, software, sensors, actuators, communication systems and payloads into a single unit for the application involved. To make it completely autonomous, the most challenging problem faced by UAVs is obstacle avoidance. In this paper, a novel method to detect frontal obstacles using monocular camera is proposed. Computer Vision algorithms like Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) and Speeded Up Robust Feature (SURF) are used to detect frontal obstacles and then distance of the obstacle from camera is calculated. To meet the defined objectives, designed system is tested with self-developed videos which are captured by DJI Phantom 4 pro

    In-medium dependence and Coulomb effects of the pion production in heavy ion collisions

    The properties of the high energy pions observed in heavy ion collisions, in particular in the system Au on Au at 1 GeV/nucleon are investigated. The reaction dynamics is described within the Quantum Molecular Dynamics (QMD) approach. It is shown that high energy pions freeze out early and originate from the hot, compressed matter. N∗N^*--resonances are found to give an important contribution toward the high energy tail of the pion. Further the role of in-medium effects in the description of charged pion yields and spectra is investigated using a microscopic potential derived from the Brueckner G-matrix which is obtained with the Reid soft-core potential. It is seen that the high energy part of the spectra is relatively more suppressed due to in-medium effects as compared to the low energy part. A comparision to experiments further demonstrates that the present calculations describe reasonably well the neutral (TAPS) and charged (FOPI) pion spectra. The observed energy dependence of the π−/π+\pi^-/\pi^+ ratio, i.e. deviations from the isobar model prediction, is due to Coulomb effects and again indicate that high energy pions probe the hot and dense phase of the reaction.     PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND IN VITRO STUDIES ON ANTIBACTERIAL, ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTIVITIES USING CASUARINA EQUISETIFOLIA BARK EXTRACTS

    Objective: Casuarina equisetifolia is an important multipurpose exotic forest tree species widely cultivated in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu that serves as a warehouse of essential secondary metabolites. Identification of these bioactive compounds in this forest tree species might lead to the discovery and development of a new drug to treat various diseases. Methods: The present study was carried out with an objective to analyse the phytochemicals qualitatively and quantitatively. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was performed to evaluate the presence of various volatile compounds. An in vitro antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of aqueous and organic solvents of C. equisetifolia bark was studied.Results: The preliminary qualitative screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, carbohydrates, proteins, flavonoids, phenols, terpenoids, and tannins. The quantitative analysis revealed the presence of maximum phenols (71.2±0.51 mg/g), flavonoids (35.12±0.34 mg/g), tannins (77.59±0.21) and terpenoids (6%) in methanolic root extract with respective standards. Several peaks were obtained in the GC-MS analysis which indicates the presence of different secondary metabolites. Antibacterial activity showed a maximum zone of inhibition against Escherichia coli (23±0.24 mm) and Proteus vulgaris (23±0.32 mm). The antioxidant potential of various extracts was compared with the standard ascorbic acid. Anti-inflammatory activity was compared with standard diclofenac sodium and the extract showed activities significantly in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: From this study, it is revealed that C. equisetifolia bark extract possesses efficient antibacterial property, the potential in scavenging free radical, effective antioxidant, powerful anti-inflammatory source that can be employed in the development of a novel drug to treat various diseases
